Web Radio - Is It The Future?

I was asked last night by a friend why Web Radio is being talked about being the next 'big' thing. I said to my friend that one reason Web radio is mushrooming is the highly social nature of its core audience.

I also said that Web Radio is the disruptive technology of the two current platforms - Satellite and Terrestrial Radio.

Web Radio will put Radio into the hands of the masses. Localized & Personalized Radio on a massively wide level, in many cities & towns, and in many countries. Terrestrial and Satellite Radio will have to compete with a million plus competitors, not just a few competitors in the areas they are now. Collaboration is what creates a premium in today's world.

Terrestrial Radio audience is dropping and they are trying to come up with a plan to stop the bleed. What they don't get is customers are now in charge and the mass market is dead and has been replaced by niche markets, taking the customers from being 'marketed to' to them 'conversing' with others by social networks. In the past to listen to the latest music, one had no choice but to listen to the Radio, and Terrestrial Radio has always been the controller of the product and the distribution, of that product and it is not an open channel, and owning the stuff is no longer the key to success.

Satellite Radio is now on its knees as it is rumored to be going into Chapter 11 in the USA (bankruptcy). Sirius shares plunged to a historical low of 5.2 cents and has $175 million of convertible notes maturing on February 17, $350 million of secured bank debt due in May 2009, and $433 million in convertible notes due December. The credit squeeze is making it hard for Sirius to meet the obligations. Will it survive? Most likely. But it will be a struggle.

Web Radio is the Future.

  1. I am in agreement with this article - as Web Radio becomes more the norm, the old media will shrink
