Home Video and Songs - Not Allowed!

Today I was emailed by a friend who explained that she had created a family video of the beaches they visited in the Mediterranean and then using Windows Moviemaker, put these clips together, added some music. She then muted the video clip soundtrack as it was just a combination of the waves, children making noise and other sounds. The music she chose was one of the Beach Boys songs and it went well with the Beach video clips. Now remember this was a 'home movie' of 2 minutes and 20 seconds long and was not for commercial use. She then using Windows Moviemaker saved it in a small enough format to add to some of the social networks she belonged to.

One of these was Facebook. Within 2 days she received an email saying the video was taken done due to using copyrighted material - i.e. the Beach Boys song. I was amazed by this as I thought as it was not for commercial use there was nothing wrong in its use - its a home movie!

In discussions with other people I find out this is wide spread and the music companies are even taking people to court of usage of music for 'personal' use. I found this cartoon which covers it all - I also asked people what they thought and the general view is the disdain for the music companies grow each day due to this sort of behaviour - what do you think?
