KryKey - the Story and the Future

If you have been following this Blog, or at least reading some of the articles in it, you will have an idea that "Web Radio" is becoming the next huge thing on the internet. All across the planet the number of listeners listening to "streaming music" is rising rapidly. Companies such as Pandora and Last.FM which have been around for nearly 10 years are looking to be profitable for the first time in 2010 due the this increase in listeners.

In 2006 the current CEO of KryKey decided the time was right to design a "web radio service" as he could see that in the not too distant future music streaming would be want people would want as any web enabled device, be it a computer or a mobile phone for example.

After numerous ideas on names, it was decided that KryKey would be what it was going to be named. The word is a play on the Australian term 'Crikey', has two syllables (kry - key) and it was unique and was not being used anywhere.

In late 2007 the work commenced in India by a development team set up to start creating/coding KryKey. During 2008 there was numerous problems with the development team as turnover was common due to team members being offered a few dollars more a week by other companies and they would leave. By the middle of 2008 KryKey was behind schedule and this caused financial problems as the money to develop the system was running out. The finance for this project was 100% by the CEO and founder and it was all made working in hot spots in the world like Iraq, Afghanistan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, to name a few as an 'Information Technology Warfare' consultant, and the last assignment he was seriously injured by an IED in Baghdad and had to have major facial surgery to fix the explosive damage.

2009 finally saw the launch of the Beta system now called in full 'KryKey Personal Web Radio' some 10 plus months behind schedule and now under capitalized.

Like all new web based services it was picked up by 'early adopters' and soon grew a health customer base. The system has some technical problems which were fixed but the continued interaction between the development team in India and the CEO grew tense as fixing one problem created another as 'due care' by the developers, fixing them in their own time contributed to this tension.

In May 2009 the CEO sent new designs to a company in Eastern Europe and shortly afterwards development of KryKey 2.0 commenced. This was after analyzing the beta system (version 1.0), collecting feedback from customers, looking how it was being used, looking what was happening in the industry and all the technical problems where found, KV2, as the project was designated was now designed as it was intended.
